The Apollo program was a huge effort to explore space. It was led by NASA to send people to the Moon.

This program changed how we understand our solar system. It was more than just a series of flights. It was a way to test new technology for deep space. NASA used this time to build great centers for space travel.

These centers helped scientists and engineers work together on hard jobs.

To reach the Moon, NASA used a step-by-step way of working. First, they used the Mercury and Gemini programs to learn about space.

Then, they built the Saturn family of rockets to carry three people at once. The spacecraft had a command and service module for the main crew. They also used a lunar module to land on the Moon's surface.

One astronaut would stay in orbit while the others landed. This careful plan allowed the crew to return safely to Earth.

President John F. Kennedy helped start this grand journey. In May 1961, he told Congress a big goal.

He wanted to land a man on the Moon and bring him home safely. This goal was very hard and cost a lot of money. At its peak, the program employed 400,000 different people. Many people worked at universities and big companies to make it happen. They all worked to reach the goal Kennedy set.

History shows that the program had many amazing moments. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 mission finally landed.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon that day. About 650 million people watched this on their televisions.

Other missions followed, like Apollo 17 in December 1972. In total, twelve people walked on the lunar surface. The program also faced hard times, like the Apollo 13 mission. In that flight, an oxygen tank exploded, but the crew returned safely.

Apollo changed the world in many ways we still see today. It brought back Moon rocks and soil for scientists to study.

These samples helped us learn about the Moon's history. The program also helped create better computers and better ways to talk across long distances.

These tools are like the ones we use in our daily lives now. Today, a new program called Artemis is following in Apollo's footsteps. It continues the work of exploring the stars and beyond.
