He was a leader during the early years of space travel. Schirra was one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury. This was the first U.S. effort to send humans into space. He was also the first person to fly in space three different times. He is the only astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.

He spent a total of 295 hours and 15 minutes in space.

His space missions worked in very important ways. During his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, he flew the spacecraft Sigma 7.

He stayed in orbit for nine hours. He even showed he could move the capsule by hand. Later, he flew the Gemini 6A mission to test how two ships could meet.

He and his partner stayed within one foot of another spacecraft for five hours. Finally, he commanded Apollo 7. This mission was an 11-day test to make sure the Apollo ships worked well.

Schirra grew up in a family that loved the sky. His father flew missions during World War I. His mother even performed wing walking stunts at fairs.

Schirra graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1945. He then became a naval aviator in 1948. He served as a fighter pilot during the Korean War. During that time, he flew 90 combat missions. He even downed two MiG-15 planes while flying the F-84 Thunderjet.

Before joining NASA, Schirra worked as a test pilot.

This job meant he flew new planes to see if they were safe. He worked at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in California. There, he was the first pilot to fire a Sidewinder missile. He also went to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 1958. He studied many different aircraft like the F4D Skyray and the F8U Crusader. He eventually retired from the Navy as a captain in 1969.

Schirra's life connects to many things we know about exploration. He helped build the tools that let humans reach for the stars. He even worked on the design of the Mercury capsules. After his flying days, he worked with CBS News. He helped people on Earth understand the Moon landings.
