Gene Cernan was a famous American astronaut and a skilled pilot. He was also an electrical engineer and an aeronautical engineer.

Cernan spent much of his life exploring the sky and space. He traveled into space three times during his career. Two of those trips were to the Moon. He is very famous because he was the last person to walk on the Moon. This makes him a very important figure in the history of space travel.

Cernan followed a very careful path to reach the stars. First, he studied electrical engineering at Purdue University in Indiana. He then joined the U.S. Navy through a special training program. He learned to fly many different types of jets, like the T-28 Trojan. He even made at least 200 successful landings on aircraft carriers.

Later, he earned a master's degree in aeronautical engineering. This helped him prepare for the hard job of being an astronaut.

His journey into space began with the Gemini program. In 1966, he flew on the Gemini 9A mission.

During this flight, he performed a spacewalk outside his spacecraft. This was only the third spacewalk ever done in history. Later, he flew on Apollo 10 in May 1969. He acted as the Lunar Module pilot for that mission.

This trip was like a practice run for landing on the Moon.

Cernan's most famous mission was Apollo 17 in December 1972. He served as the commander, which means he was the leader of the crew.

He traveled to the Moon with a geologist named Harrison Schmitt. Together, they spent about 22 hours exploring the Taurus-Littrow valley.

They drove a Lunar Roving Vehicle across the surface. Cernan even set a speed record on the Moon while driving the rover. They collected many rock samples to help scientists learn about the Moon.

Cernan's life connects to many things we know about exploration. He was one of only twelve people to ever walk on the Moon. He was also one of only three astronauts to visit the Moon twice.

Even after he retired from NASA in 1976, he stayed busy. He worked in private business and talked about science on television. He even wrote a book called "The Last Man on the Moon." He passed away in 2017 at the age of 82.
