Hermann Oberth was a pioneer who helped start the age of space travel.

He was born in 1894 in a place called Nagyszeben. This area is now part of Romania. As a young boy, he loved reading stories about traveling to the moon. These books sparked a deep interest in how rockets work. By the age of 14, he had already built his very first model rocket. He even came up with the idea for a multistage rocket on his own. A multistage rocket uses several parts that drop away as they fly. This helps the vehicle move much faster and higher into space.

Oberth's ideas were very advanced for his time.

He believed that machines could eventually fly higher than our atmosphere. He also thought these machines could go fast enough to leave Earth's gravity. In his books, he explained how people might travel in these rockets. He even wrote about the need for special space suits to keep people safe. He imagined space stations that could orbit the Earth to watch our planet. He also thought about using telescopes in space to look at stars. These ideas seemed like science fiction to many people in the 1920s.

It was not always easy for Oberth to share his work.

In 1922, a university rejected his ideas about rocket science. They called his work "utopian," which means they thought it was impossible. However, he did not give up on his dreams. He eventually earned his doctorate in 1923 from a university in Romania. He then wrote a famous book called "The Rocket into Planetary Space." Later, he wrote a much larger book titled "Ways to Spaceflight." This book became a guide for many people who wanted to study space.

Oberth spent much of his life teaching and mentoring others.

He was a member of a group called the Spaceflight Society. He taught physics and math at a high school for many years. One of his most famous students was Wernher von Braun.

Von Braun later helped build the giant Saturn V rockets. These rockets were used to land humans on the moon in 1969. Oberth also helped with a famous movie about space travel. This helped many people become interested in the science of rockets.

One of his most unique ideas was the space mirror.

He imagined huge mirrors floating in orbit around the Earth. These mirrors would be between 100 and 300 kilometers wide. They would be made of many small parts that could move. These mirrors could focus sunlight on specific parts of the Earth. This might help change the weather or help people live in new ways. While we cannot build these yet, they show how much he thought about the future. His work helped turn his big dreams into real science.
