The V-2 rocket was a very important machine. It was the world's first modern ballistic missile. A ballistic missile is a rocket that follows a set path through the air.

During the Second World War, Nazi Germany built these rockets. They called them "vengeance weapons." They used them to attack cities like London, Antwerp, and Liège. The rockets moved at supersonic speeds. This means they flew faster than the speed of sound. Because they were so fast, they hit their targets without any sound to warn people.

How did the rocket work? It used a liquid-propellant rocket engine to fly. The rocket carried a mixture of 75% ethanol and 25% water as fuel. It also carried liquid oxygen as an oxidizer.

A special part called a turbopump moved these liquids. This pump spun at 4,000 rpm to push the liquids into a combustion chamber. Inside the chamber, the liquids ignited. This created a huge amount of power. The engine produced 25 tons of thrust to lift the 13.5 ton rocket. The water in the fuel helped keep the engine cool.

Many people worked to make the V-2 possible. A scientist named Wernher von Braun led the work. He was interested in rockets since he was a teenager. He even built a homemade toy rocket car once.

Later, he worked at the Peenemünde Army Research Center. Other scientists like Walter Dornberger and Walter Riedel also helped. They used ideas from an American named Robert H. Goddard. The rockets were guided by a computer and special spinning tools called gyros. These tools helped the rocket stay on its path.

Building these rockets had a very high cost. The rockets were made at a site called Mittelwerk. Many people died while making them. About 12,000 laborers and prisoners died during production.

When the rockets were used in attacks, about 9,000 people died. In June 1944, one rocket reached 100 kilometers high. This is the height scientists use to mark the edge of space. This made the V-2 the first man-made object to travel into space.

After the war ended, the V-2 changed the world of science. Many countries wanted to learn how it worked. The United States, United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union all studied the technology.

Through a program called Operation Paperclip, teams captured the rocket parts. This technology helped people build better missiles later. It also helped humans learn how to fly into space. The V-2 was a difficult and sad invention, but it led to the space age.
