Public relations is a way for people and companies to share information with the public. Lee believed that groups had a responsibility to be honest with the people they served. He did not just want to send messages out to the world. He also wanted his clients to listen to what the public had to say. This idea is often called a "two-way street" approach. By doing this, he helped change how big organizations act during hard times.

His work often followed a clear set of steps to solve problems. One famous method involved how people manage their time and tasks. Lee advised the Bethlehem Steel Corporation to use a special system for work. He suggested that workers should list their most important tasks every single day. They should work on these tasks in order of importance. They should not move to a new task until the current one is done. This helped people stay focused instead of trying to do too many things at once.

Lee's career began with a background in news and politics. He was born near Cedartown, Georgia, in 1877. He studied at Emory College and later graduated from Princeton University. Before becoming a public relations expert, he worked as a newspaper reporter. He wrote for famous papers like the New York Times and the New York World. In 1905, he started a firm called Parker and Lee. He later opened his own office called Ivy Lee & Associates in 1919. He worked with many famous people, including George Westinghouse and Charles Lindbergh.

Many big names and events shaped his professional life. In 1906, he helped a railroad company after a train wreck in Atlantic City.

He encouraged them to give facts to reporters right away. This was one of the very first press releases ever used. In 1914, he began working for John D. Rockefeller Jr. He helped the Rockefeller family improve their image after a violent strike in Colorado. He also served as a publicity director for the American Red Cross during World War I. Lee advised many industries, such as steel, tobacco, and automobile companies.

Today, we see the results of his work in many places. His ideas about crisis communications help leaders handle difficult news. The "Ivy Lee Method" of making task lists is still used by people who want to be more productive. Even his advice to "tell the truth" is a famous rule in his field. He showed that being open can help a person or a company gain trust. His life's work helped build the way we receive news from big groups today. He died in New York City in 1934 at the age of 57.
