Solomon R. Guggenheim was a very busy man. He was a businessman and an art collector. He is most famous for starting a foundation and a museum. These help people enjoy modern art. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1861. His parents came from Switzerland and Germany. His father owned a company that made embroidery.

Solomon worked in many different ways. First, he studied business in Switzerland. He worked for his family's needlework business in Germany. Later, he worked in the family mining business. His family owned mines for gold, silver, copper, and lead. He even helped run a copper company in Chile. In 1906, he started the Yukon Gold Company in Alaska.

Solomon began to collect art in the 1890s. He was inspired by his wife, Irene Rothschild. He retired from his business in 1919. He wanted to spend more time with art. In 1926, he met Baroness Hilla von Rebay. She was an art advisor. She helped him find non-objective art. This is art that does not look like real objects.

He built many things to help art grow. In 1937, he started the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. He opened a museum in 1939 in New York City. At first, it was called the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. He bought many works by artists like Wassily Kandinsky. He also bought art by Marc Chagall and Joan Miró. The collection grew very large over the years.

Because the collection was so big, he needed a new home for it. In 1943, he asked Frank Lloyd Wright to design a building. This famous architect created a special place for the art. The new Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened in 1959. It is located in New York City. His niece, Peggy Guggenheim, also started a museum in Venice. Today, many people visit these places to see beautiful art.
