He was the managing director at a company called Harland and Wolff in Belfast. As a naval architect, he was the person in charge of making the plans for huge ships. He was most famous for designing the Olympic-class ocean liners. This group of ships included the RMS Titanic. His work helped create some of the largest and most luxurious ships ever seen at sea.

Andrews had a very specific way of working to ensure quality. He began his career with a five-year apprenticeship at the shipyard. He spent time in the joiners' shop and the cabinetmakers' shop. He also worked directly on the ships for several months. The final part of his training took place in the drawing office. He worked hard during the day and studied even more during the evening hours. This dedication helped him become a leader in ship design.

During the Titanic's first voyage, Andrews was part of a special group of workers. This group was called the guarantee group. Their job was to watch how the ship worked and find ways to make it better. Andrews traveled from Belfast to see the ship's sea trials in April 1912. He stayed in First Class cabin A-36. While the ship traveled, he constantly took notes on how to improve the design. He even checked small things like electric fans and tables.

Andrews was known as a person who truly cared about his crew and his ships. He was often described as cheery, optimistic, and generous by those who knew him. He would share his lunch with fellow workers at the shipyard. He also listened to the ideas of the people doing the hard manual labor. Many people felt he put his positive personality into the ships he built. He believed the Titanic was almost as perfect as a human brain could make her. Sadly, he perished when the ship sank on its maiden voyage.
