The Reichstag fire was a very important event in German history. It happened on Monday, February 27, 1933. The fire hit the Reichstag building in Berlin. This building was the home of the German parliament.

At this time, Adolf Hitler had just become the Chancellor of Germany. He had been sworn in only four weeks before the fire started. The fire changed how the country was run for many years. It helped the Nazi Party take much more control over the nation.

The fire began late at night after 9:00 p.m. A fire station in Berlin received an alarm call about the flames. Firefighters and police rushed to the building very quickly.

Even though they worked hard, the fire was huge. Most of the building was destroyed by the flames. By 11:30 p.m., the firefighters finally put the fire out. When the police searched the ruins, they found a man named Marinus van der Lubbe. He was a Dutch communist, and the police arrested him right there.

After the fire, the Nazi leaders used the event to change the law. They told President Paul von Hindenburg that communists were plotting against the government. This led to the Reichstag Fire Decree. This new law took away many civil liberties from the people. It stopped freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

The police also arrested many members of the Communist Party. This made it very hard for them to take part in the next election. Because the communists were gone, the Nazi Party grew much larger in the March elections.

A big trial was held to decide who was responsible. It began in September 1933 in the city of Leipzig. The trial was very famous and was even broadcast on the radio.

There were many reporters from other countries watching the court. Five men were accused of the crime. These men were Marinus van der Lubbe, Ernst Torgler, Georgi Dimitrov, Vasil Tanev, and Blagoy Popov. The judges had to decide if they had worked together to start the fire.

The trial ended with different results for the men. The four communists were found not guilty by the court. However, Marinus van der Lubbe was found guilty and was executed.

Many historians still debate if he acted alone or if it was a Nazi plot. In 2008, the government of Germany gave Van der Lubbe a pardon. This was done to fix an unfair verdict from the Nazi era. This event shows how one single moment can change the path of a whole country.
