It is a mix of metals. This mix is called an alloy. It uses mostly aluminium. It also adds copper, magnesium, and manganese.

The copper makes the metal hard. But copper can cause corrosion. Corrosion is when metal breaks down.

To stop this, makers use alclad. This is a thin layer of pure aluminium. It protects the metal underneath.

Alfred Wilm made duralumin in 1909. He found a special way to make it hard. First, the metal is heated up. This is called solution annealing. Then, the metal is cooled very fast. This is called quenching. Finally, the metal sits at room temperature. This last step is called aging. During aging, tiny bits form inside the metal. These bits act like tiny walls. They make the metal much stronger. People use duralumin for planes and airships. It is also used for bike parts and car wheels.
