Copernicium

Scientists made a new element called copernicium.

Nikolaus Kopernikus
Nikolaus Kopernikus

It is a very heavy part of matter. It has the number 112. People can only make it in a lab. They do this by firing tiny pieces of zinc at lead. This was first done in Germany in 1996. It was named after the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. He was a man who changed how we see the world.

Copernicium is very unstable. This means it does not last long. It is radioactive and breaks down fast. The most stable kind lasts about 30 seconds. Other kinds last for even less time. Some last less than one millisecond. A millisecond is a tiny part of a second.

This element is very strange. It is in a group with zinc and mercury. But it might act like a noble gas. Noble gases are things like radon. It might even be a gas at room temperature. This would be very different from other metals. Most metals are solid. Scientists are still studying how it works.
