Cupronickel

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cupronickel is a special metal. It is an alloy, which means it is a mix of metals. Most cupronickel is made of copper and nickel. It usually has between 60 and 90 percent copper. People sometimes add small amounts of iron or manganese to make it stronger.

Even though it has much copper, it does not look orange. Instead, it looks silver. This makes it great for making coins. Many countries use it for money. The United States uses it for dimes and quarters.

Cupronickel is very good at resisting corrosion. Corrosion is when metal breaks down from things like salt water. Because it stays strong in the ocean, people use it for boats. It is used for boat hulls and propellers. It is also used for pipes and cooling systems in ships.
