Constantan

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Constantan is a special metal mix. It is an alloy. An alloy is a mix of two or more metals. This mix uses 55% copper and 45% nickel. In 1887, Edward Weston found a way to make it. It was first made in Germany. There, people called it "Konstantan."

This metal is very useful. It stays steady when it gets hot. Its electrical resistance does not change much with heat. This makes it great for many tools. One use is in strain gauges. These tools measure how much things stretch. Constantan is the oldest alloy used in these tools. It is still the most common choice today.

Constantan can do many jobs. It helps make heat. It also works in thermocouples. A thermocouple is a tool that measures heat. Constantan works well with iron or copper wires to do this. Some types of constantan are very easy to stretch. This is called being ductile. This helps when measuring very large stretches in metals or plastics.
