Constantan

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Constantan is a special metal mix called an alloy. An alloy happens when you mix different metals together. This specific mix uses 55% copper and 45% nickel. It is very important because it stays steady when things get hot. Most metals change how they work when the temperature shifts. Constantan keeps its electrical resistance very stable instead. This makes it a great tool for many science jobs.

This metal works well in tools called strain gauges. A strain gauge is a device that measures how much something stretches. Constantan is the oldest alloy used for these tools. It is still the most widely used choice today. It has a good gauge factor, which means it is not easily changed by heat. It also has high enough resistance to work in very small grids. The metal is strong and can stretch quite a bit without breaking.

People discovered this metal a long time ago. In 1887, a man named Edward Weston found it. He noticed that some metals have a negative temperature coefficient. This means their resistance changes in a specific way when heated. He called his new discovery "Alloy No. 2." Later, the alloy was made in Germany. There, it was given the name "Konstantan."

There are different types of this metal for different jobs. One type is called A-alloy. It can be made to match other materials as they grow or shrink with heat. It comes in many numbers like 00, 03, and 50. Another type is called P alloy. This version is very ductile, which means it is easy to stretch. It can be stretched by more than 20% in certain lengths. P alloy is good for measuring very large stretches.

Constantan is also used to measure heat. It can form thermocouples with wires made of iron or copper. A thermocouple is a tool that turns heat into an electrical signal. Constantan has a strong negative Seebeck coefficient. This helps it sense temperature changes very well. You might also find it used in electrical resistance heating. It is a very useful material for many different machines.
