A diode is a tiny electronic part with two terminals.

Its main job is to control the path of electricity. Most diodes allow electric current to flow in only one direction. This is called asymmetric conductance.

You can imagine a diode acting like a check valve in a water pipe. The valve lets water flow forward but stops it from flowing backward. This special behavior helps keep electricity moving the right way in a circuit.

Modern semiconductor diodes work using a special meeting point called a p–n junction.

These diodes are usually made from silicon, but sometimes scientists use germanium or gallium arsenide. To start the flow, the electricity must reach a specific level called a threshold voltage.

Once the voltage passes this "turn-on" point, the current begins to move. If the voltage is too low, almost no current will pass through. Some diodes even have a breakdown voltage, where they suddenly allow current to flow in reverse to protect a circuit.

People have been studying these one-way paths for a long time.

In 1874, a German physicist named Ferdinand Braun discovered how electricity moves across a metal and mineral contact. Later, John Ambrose Fleming patented the first true thermionic diode in Britain in 1904.

Around the same time, Jagadish Chandra Bose used crystals to detect radio waves. In 1906, Greenleaf Whittier Pickard patented a silicon crystal detector. These early discoveries helped lead to the advanced electronics we use today.

There are many different kinds of diodes used for different tasks.

One common type is the light-emitting diode, or LED, which turns electricity into light. You might see these as small status lights on your gadgets. Another important use is rectification, which turns alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC).

Some diodes can even act as temperature sensors. Other special types, like Zener diodes, are used to regulate voltage in a system.

Even though they are small, diodes are found in almost every piece of technology.

They help radio receivers pick up signals through a process called demodulation. In the past, people used large vacuum tube diodes to power radios and televisions.

Today, tiny semiconductor diodes do most of this work. They are the building blocks that allow our phones, computers, and lights to function safely and reliably.
