Rectifier

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A rectifier is a special device that changes electricity. Most power from walls moves back and forth. This is called alternating current, or AC. Other power flows in only one direction. This is called direct current, or DC.

A rectifier turns AC into DC. This process is called rectification. It "straightens" the direction of the current. Many machines need this steady power. Computers, televisions, and radios all use it.

There are different ways a rectifier works. A half-wave rectifier is a simple way. It lets the positive half of the AC wave pass through. Then, it blocks the negative half. This leaves the power jumping or pulsating.

A full-wave rectifier is much more efficient. It turns the whole AC wave into DC. This creates a higher average voltage. Some circuits use four diodes in a bridge shape. This is called a bridge rectifier.

People have used many tools to do this over time. Early radio receivers were called crystal radios. They used a fine wire called a "cat's whisker." This wire pressed against a crystal of galena.

Later, people used vacuum tube diodes. These were glass tubes that controlled electricity. In April 1915, Saul Dushman from General Electric introduced a new type. He called his device the Kenotron.

Today, we mostly use silicon parts called semiconductors. These are often called diodes. They are very reliable for many jobs.

For very big jobs, we use thyristors. These are silicon-controlled rectifiers. They act like switches to pass current in one direction. Industrial systems often use three-phase rectification. This uses three different AC paths at once.

An automobile alternator uses nine diodes to charge a battery.

You can see rectifiers working in your own home. Most electronic equipment needs a steady voltage. This is just like the power from a battery.

Sometimes, the DC from a rectifier is still a bit jumpy. We use a filter to smooth it out. This might use a capacitor or a resistor. These parts help make the power steady and constant. An inverter does the exact opposite job. It turns DC back into AC.
