An AC adapter is a special tool used to power electronic devices.

Many small gadgets cannot take electricity directly from a wall outlet. The power in a wall outlet is much too strong. It could damage the device or be unsafe. The adapter acts as a middleman to fix this. It takes the high voltage from the wall and changes it. This creates a lower, safer amount of electricity for your device.

Using an adapter also helps keep your gadgets from getting too hot.

How these tools work has changed over time. Older adapters used a part called a transformer to lower the voltage. They also used a rectifier to change the type of electricity. A filter was then used to smooth out the flow. This process was often slow and wasted a lot of energy as heat. Today, most people use switched-mode power supplies, or SMPSs.

These work by switching electricity on and off very quickly. This high-speed switching allows the transformer to be much smaller. It also makes the adapter much more efficient and lightweight.

In the past, adapters were often very heavy and bulky. This was because the old transformers were quite large. If an adapter needed to provide a lot of power, it became too heavy to hang from a wall.

Some older versions were even called battery eliminators. As technology improved, engineers found ways to make them smaller. In the early 2000s, the newer switching designs became almost everywhere. This change made it much easier to carry chargers for phones and tablets.

There are many important facts about how these devices behave. Some adapters are universal and can work in many different countries.

A single unit can often handle between 100 and 240 volts. Some modern chargers even use a material called gallium nitride. This special material helps tiny plugs provide enough power for big laptops. However, some cheap adapters can cause radio interference. This might make it harder to hear a radio or use WiFi.

You can find the culprit by unplugging them one by one.

You likely see these tools every single day in your home. You might see a large "power brick" for a laptop.

You probably also use a small plug to charge your phone. Some special chargers use new rules to power up batteries faster. These are called Quick Charge or USB Power Delivery. They can even change the voltage to match what a battery needs. This helps the device charge quickly without getting too hot. It is amazing how much science fits into such a small plug.
