A power supply is an electrical device that gives energy to a load.

A load is just the name for the thing using the power. The main job of this device is to change electric current. It converts power from a source to the right voltage and current.

It might also change the frequency to match what the load needs. Because they change power, people sometimes call them electric power converters. Some power supplies are separate boxes you use on a desk. Others are built right inside the things they power, like computers.

Power supplies work by moving energy from an input to an output. The input receives energy from a source like a battery or a wall outlet. This source could be the electric power grid or even solar power.

Once the power enters, the device changes it for the load. Some supplies use wires to move the energy to the load. Other special supplies use wireless energy transfer to move power without wires. Many supplies also act as a shield for the load. They can stop electrical noise or sudden surges from reaching the device. They can even store energy to keep things running during a short power gap.

There are two main ways these devices change power. The first way is called a linear power supply.

In a linear supply, the input power goes through a transformer first. Then, it goes through a process called rectification and filtering. This makes the electricity steady and smooth for the load. The second way is a switched-mode power supply, or SMPS.

This type turns the power on and off very fast. It switches at high speeds between 10 kHz and 1 MHz. This fast switching lets the device use much smaller and lighter parts. Because it does not waste much energy as heat, it is very efficient.

Different tools use different kinds of power supplies. A bench power supply is a standalone unit used for testing circuits.

Some people use rack mount supplies that fit into standard equipment racks.

You might also use an external power supply, like an AC adapter. Some people call these "power bricks" or "wall warts."

These are very safe for home electronics. They change the dangerous 120 or 240-volt current into a safer voltage. This happens before the electricity even enters the appliance body.

Many power supplies include special features to keep things safe. Some have a "crowbar circuit" to protect against high voltage.

If the voltage gets too high, this circuit can clamp the output to the ground. Other supplies use a feedback controller to watch the current. This helps the supply keep a constant voltage even if the load changes. Some computer supplies even send a "power good" signal to the computer. If the voltage is not right, the computer will not start. These smart features help protect both the user and the expensive machines.
