A power supply is an electrical device that provides energy to an electrical load.

Its primary function is to act as an electric power converter. It transforms electric current from a source into the specific voltage, current, and frequency required by the load. Some power supplies are standalone units, while others are integrated directly into the appliances they power.

For example, desktop computers and various consumer electronics contain built-in power supplies. Beyond simple conversion, these devices can perform several protective and stabilizing tasks.

Modern power supplies offer many advanced functions to ensure stability and safety. They can limit the current drawn by a load to keep it at safe levels. Some units can shut off the current immediately if they detect an electrical fault. They also perform power conditioning to block electronic noise or voltage surges from reaching the load. Additionally, they may provide power-factor correction or store energy to prevent interruptions during temporary power gaps.

This stored energy is often provided by an uninterruptible power supply.

All power supplies consist of an input connection and one or more output connections. The input receives energy from a source, such as the electric power grid, batteries, or solar power converters.

The output, often called a power rail, delivers that current to the load. While most connections are hardwired, some advanced systems use wireless energy transfer to power loads without cables. Power supplies can also include extra inputs for external monitoring and control functions.

There are several ways to classify power supplies based on their features. A regulated power supply maintains a constant output voltage or current despite changes in the input or the load. In contrast, an unregulated supply allows the output to change significantly when conditions shift. Some units are adjustable, meaning users can program the output using mechanical knobs or control inputs.

Furthermore, an isolated power supply ensures the output is electrically independent from the input.

Power conversion methods are broadly divided into linear and switching types. In a linear power supply, the input power is processed directly through active components.

The process begins when the AC input passes through a power transformer. Next, it undergoes rectification and filtering to produce a DC voltage. Filtering is used to minimize the AC frequency components, known as ripple voltage. This can range from a single capacitor to a complex pi filter. Because power is lost as heat during linear operation, these units are generally less efficient than switching types.

A switched-mode power supply (SMPS) uses a different mechanism for higher efficiency.

In an SMPS, the AC mains input is rectified and filtered to create a DC voltage. This voltage is then switched on and off at very high frequencies, typically between 10 kHz and 1 MHz. This high-speed switching allows the use of much smaller and lighter transformers and capacitors. After passing through a high-frequency transformer or inductor, the current is rectified and filtered again to create the final DC output. To maintain a constant voltage, these supplies use a feedback controller to monitor the current drawn by the load.

Safety is a critical component of power supply design, especially in switching systems. Some SMPS units include a crowbar circuit, which protects the device by clamping the output to the ground if voltage exceeds a limit.

Other supplies use current limiting to prevent damage from abnormal draws. In computers, a "power good" signal is often sent to the motherboard to ensure voltages are correct before operation begins. However, designers must be careful with "no-load" conditions. If a load is disconnected, the output voltage can spike to the peak value of the transformer's secondary voltage. This can happen because the inductor in the filter fails to drop much voltage, potentially damaging the supply or the connected components.

Power supplies are also categorized by their physical packaging. A bench power supply is a standalone desktop unit used for testing and circuit development.

Rack mount power supplies are designed to be secured into standard electronic equipment racks. Some supplies are open frame, meaning they have only a partial enclosure and are built into larger machinery. External supplies, such as AC adapters or "power bricks," are common in consumer electronics.

These are often used because they transform hazardous 120- or 240-volt mains current into a safer voltage before it enters the appliance.
