An AC adapter is a tool that gives power to your devices.

Most small tools cannot take power directly from a wall outlet. The outlet has too much power. It can even be dangerous. The adapter changes that high power into a lower, safer amount.

This helps keep you safe. It also keeps your device from getting too hot.

In the past, adapters used a part called a transformer. These were often heavy and large. They also wasted a lot of power as heat. Today, many adapters use a different way called switched-mode power supplies. These are much smaller and lighter. They are also very efficient. This means they do not waste as much energy.

Some new adapters use a material called gallium nitride. This helps them make more power while staying small. Because of this, a tiny plug can now power a laptop!

Adapters are very useful for travel. One adapter can work with different kinds of power from around the world.
