A diode bridge is a special tool for electricity.

It helps change AC power into DC power. AC power flows back and forth. DC power flows in only one direction.

The bridge uses four diodes. A diode is a part that lets current flow one way. It blocks current from going the wrong way.

This bridge works like a set of paths. When the AC power switches sides, the diodes guide it. They redirect the flow so it always exits the same way. This process is called rectification.

The output from a bridge is not perfectly smooth. It has a bumpy flow called ripple. To fix this, engineers use a filter. A filter can be a large capacitor. A capacitor is a part that stores power. It fills in the gaps to make the flow steady.

Karol Pollak invented this circuit in 1895. Leo Graetz also made a similar one in 1897. Today, we often buy them as one single part. They can even protect tools if a battery is put in backward.
