Direct current

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Electricity can flow in different ways. One way is called direct current. We often call this DC.

In DC, the electric charge flows in one direction. It stays on a constant path. This is different from alternating current, or AC. AC changes its direction back and forth.

You can use a rectifier to change AC into DC. A rectifier is a tool that lets power flow in only one way.

DC is very useful in our daily lives. It is used to charge batteries. It also powers many electronic systems and motors. Many cars use DC to run lights and start the engine. Most cars use a 12 volt system. Some large trucks use 24 volts.

Scientists also use DC for big jobs. It can be used to melt aluminum. High-voltage DC is used to move power over long distances. It can even work under the sea in big cables between countries.
