It is the difference in electric potential between two points. You can think of it like water in a pipe.

A pump creates pressure to move water. In a circuit, voltage acts like that pump. It pushes electric charges through wires.

We measure voltage using a tool called a voltmeter. The unit for voltage is the volt. It is named after Alessandro Volta. He was an Italian scientist. He helped invent the first chemical battery.

Different things use different amounts of voltage. A small battery for a flashlight uses 1.5 volts. A car battery uses 12 volts. Power lines that carry electricity to homes use much more. Some lines use hundreds of thousands of volts.

This high voltage helps move power over long distances. Voltage can come from many places. It can come from batteries or from generators. It can even come from sunlight hitting a cell.
