Voltage

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Voltage is a very important part of how electricity works. It is also called electric potential difference or electric pressure. You can think of voltage as the difference in energy between two points.

This difference is what allows electricity to move through a system. Without this difference, charges would not flow. Voltage can be found in many things, like batteries or generators. It can even come from sunlight hitting a cell.

To understand how it works, imagine water flowing through pipes. A pump creates pressure to move the water through the system. In an electric circuit, voltage acts just like that pump. It provides the push needed to move electric charges.

The larger the voltage, the greater the flow of electricity. This flow is called electric current. If the voltage is too low, the current might not move at all. For example, a dead car battery cannot push enough current to start an engine.

Scientists have studied this for a long time. The unit used to measure voltage is the volt. It is named after Alessandro Volta. He was an Italian physicist who lived from 1745 to 1827. He invented the voltaic pile. This was likely the very first chemical battery.

Since 1990, scientists have used special effects to define the volt. In 2019, they even used physical constants to set the definition. This helps everyone around the world use the same measurements.

There are many different levels of voltage in our world. A small battery for a flashlight uses only 1.5 volts. A battery in a car usually provides 12 volts. The electricity in your home is much stronger. In North America, it is often 110 to 120 volts. In most of Europe, it is 220 to 240 volts.

Power lines use even more, sometimes reaching 1200 kV. This high voltage helps move power over long distances.

We use special tools to see how much voltage is present. A voltmeter is the most common tool for this job. You connect one lead to one point and another lead to a second point. Some tools, like an oscilloscope, can show how voltage changes over time.

Engineers use these tools to check if a circuit is working safely. They can also measure the voltage drop across a device. This tells them how much energy is being used by that part. Understanding voltage helps us use technology every single day.
