A volt is a unit used to measure electric potential.

This is often called voltage or electromotive force. It is part of the International System of Units. Think of voltage as the push behind electricity.

You can compare it to water pressure in a pipe. In this comparison, voltage is like the pressure. The current is like the amount of water flowing. A resistor is like a thin part of the pipe. This makes it harder for the flow to pass.

Scientists define one volt in a few specific ways. One volt happens when one ampere of current moves. This current must dissipate one watt of power between two points. You can also think about energy and charge. One volt imparts one joule of energy per coulomb of charge. This means the energy moves through the wire in a set way. It can also be measured using resistance and current. This connection is known as Ohm's law.

We owe the name of this unit to Alessandro Volta.

In the year 1800, he made the voltaic pile. This was an early version of a battery. He used zinc and silver to make it work. Later, in 1861, Latimer Clark and Sir Charles Bright named it. They actually suggested "volt" for resistance at first. By 1873, the British Association for the Advancement of Science defined it. In 1881, the International Electrical Congress approved the name.

Many different things use different amounts of volts. A single C-cell battery provides 1.5 volts. A car battery with six cells gives 12.6 volts. Household power uses different levels in different places. Japan uses 100 volts for its homes. North America uses 120 volts for its houses. Europe and Australia use 230 volts. High-speed trains use 25,000 volts from overhead lines. Even lightning is huge at 150 million volts.

Measuring the volt precisely is a very important job. Scientists use a special effect called the Josephson effect. This helps them turn frequency into a voltage. They use an array of many tiny junctions for this. These junctions are excited by microwave signals. The signals can be between 10 and 80 GHz. In 2019, the rules for the volt changed slightly. The new rules use the exact value of the elementary charge. This makes our measurements very steady and reliable.
