We can talk about electric potential. This is a way to measure electric energy. It tells us how much work we must do to move a charge.

Imagine a tiny test charge. We want to move it from one spot to another. The amount of work we do depends on the electric field.

Electric potential is often measured in volts. A volt is just a unit of measurement. We compare the energy to the amount of charge. This helps us study the field itself. We use a starting point called a reference point. At this spot, the potential is zero. Usually, we use the Earth as our zero point.

If you have a single point charge, it makes a field. The potential changes based on how far away you are. As you move further away, the potential drops. If you have many charges, you can add them up. This makes it easy to find the total potential.
