Electromagnetic four-potential

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Scientists study electric and magnetic fields. These fields make light and magnets work. They can use a special tool called an electromagnetic four-potential. This tool is a way to group two things together. It joins an electric scalar potential with a magnetic vector potential. The electric part is one piece. The other three pieces make up the magnetic part.

This group is very helpful in special relativity. Special relativity is a way to look at how things move. The four-potential stays the same even when we change how we look at it. This is called being Lorentz covariant. This means the math works in many ways. Scientists can also use a gauge. A gauge is a choice that helps simplify the math.

Different gauges can lead to the same field. This is called gauge freedom. Even if you change the potential using a gauge, the field stays the same. This tool helps us find the electromagnetic tensor. The tensor is a way to show how the fields act. It uses the four-potential to show these parts clearly.
