Direct current

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Direct current is a way that electricity moves. We often call it DC for short.

Types of current
Types of current

In a DC system, the electric charge flows in only one direction. This is different from alternating current, or AC. In AC, the flow changes direction back and forth. DC can move through wires or even through a vacuum. It can also flow through things called semiconductors or insulators.

This steady flow makes DC very important for many tools.

How does a DC circuit work? It needs a power source like a battery. This source has a positive and a negative end called terminals. To make the electricity move, charges must flow from the positive end to the load. Then, the charges must return to the negative end to finish the path. This creates a complete loop. If you disconnect one end, the charges will stop moving. Most DC tools need you to connect the positive and negative ends in the right spots.

People have studied this for a long time. In 1800, a physicist named Alessandro Volta made the first battery. He called it the Voltaic pile. Later, André-Marie Ampère thought that current moved from positive to negative. In 1832, Hippolyte Pixii built the first dynamo generator. At first, his machine made alternating current. To fix this, he added a part called a commutator. This acted like a switch to make the current flow in one direction.

There are many specific facts about how we use DC today. Most cars use a 12 volt system to run lights and engines. Large trucks or farm machines often use 24 volt systems. Some electric cars use very high voltage, between 300 and 400 volts. In the 1880s, Thomas Edison used low voltage DC for indoor lights. Today, we use high-voltage DC to send power over very long distances. It is even the only way to send power through big cables under the sea.

You can find DC in almost every room of your house. It is the kind of power used to charge your batteries. Most electronic devices need a DC power supply to work. If you have AC power from a wall plug, you can use a rectifier. A rectifier is a tool that changes AC into DC. This allows your gadgets to use the steady flow they need. DC is also used in big factories to melt aluminum through special processes.
