A film capacitor is a part used in many electronic tools.

It uses a thin plastic film as a dielectric. A dielectric is a material that does not let electricity flow through it easily. This film is made very thin. Then, metal is put on the surface. These metal layers are called electrodes.

There are two main ways to make these. One way uses a thin metal foil. This type can handle big surges of power. Another way uses a very thin layer of metal. This layer is spread onto the plastic. These are called metallized film capacitors.

These parts have a cool trick called self-healing.

If there is a tiny break in the metal, the heat from the electricity burns it away. This fixes the break so the part still works. To make them, the films are wound into a tube. Often, they are flattened to save space. Finally, the part is coated to keep it safe from moisture.
