An electrolytic capacitor is a part that stores electric power.

It can hold much more power than other types of capacitors. This is because it uses a very thin layer to hold the charge.

Inside, a metal part is called the anode. This metal has a special coating on it. We make this coating through a way called anodic oxidation. This process creates a thin oxide layer. This layer acts as a dielectric, which is a material that blocks electricity.

To make the part even better, the metal is often etched or sintered. This makes the surface rough. A rough surface has more area than a smooth one. More area helps the part store more power.

A liquid or gel called an electrolyte covers the oxide layer. This electrolyte acts as the cathode, or the negative side.

You must use these parts carefully. They are polarized. This means they have a plus side and a minus side. You must always connect the plus side to the higher power. If you use them the wrong way, they can fail. This can cause a fire or an explosion.

There are three main types: aluminium, tantalum, and niobium.
