A variable capacitor is a part that can change its power.

It helps tools like radios find the right station. You can change it by moving parts or using electricity.

Most use metal plates to work. One set of plates stays still. We call these stator plates. Another set moves on an axis. These are rotor plates.

When you turn the rotor, the plates overlap more. This makes the capacitance higher. When they do not overlap, the capacitance is lower.

Some use air or plastic between the plates. Others use a vacuum. A vacuum is a space with no air. This helps the part handle more power.

Some parts are very small. We call these trimmer capacitors. They are used to set a signal very precisely. You can also find these parts in microphones. In a microphone, a thin part moves. This movement changes the signal. It turns sound into electricity. It is a clever way to use science!
