Variable capacitor

A variable capacitor is a special tool used in electronics. Its main job is to change its capacitance, which is how much electrical energy it can hold.

You can change this amount on purpose. This is very important for tools like radios. It helps them tune into a specific station. Without this part, a radio could not find the right signal. It is also used in antenna tuners to match impedance. This means it helps the antenna work better with the rest of the tool.

Most of these parts work by moving metal plates. One set of plates is called the stator, and these stay still. The other set is called the rotor, and it can move.

In a common rotary type, the rotor sits in the gaps between the stator plates. When you turn the rotor, the plates overlap more. This is called being "meshed," and it creates the highest capacitance. When they do not overlap, they are "unmeshed." This results in the lowest capacitance.

Some use air or plastic between the plates to help them work.

History shows us how these ideas grew. A Hungarian engineer named Dezső Korda worked on this. He invented the variable capacitor that uses air.

He received a patent for his invention in Germany. This happened on 13 December 1893. This was a long time ago, but the idea is still used today. Even though many modern radios use digital ways to tune, these parts remain important. They helped start the age of wireless communication.

There are many different ways to build these parts. Some use a vacuum, which is a space with no air.

A vacuum variable capacitor uses cylinders that slide in and out. This helps the part handle much higher voltage and current. These are often used in big broadcasting transmitters. Other types are very small and are called trimmer capacitors. You might use a tiny screwdriver to adjust them. They help set a signal very precisely at a factory.

Variable capacitors are also used to turn movement into signals. This happens in a condenser microphone.

Inside the microphone, a thin part called a diaphragm acts as one plate. When sound makes the diaphragm vibrate, the distance to the other plate changes. This change in distance changes the capacitance. This is how the microphone turns sound into an electrical signal. You can also find similar parts in computer keyboards and touch buttons. They help sense when you press a key.
