Potentiometer

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A potentiometer is a special tool used to control electricity. It is a three-terminal resistor that works as an adjustable voltage divider. This means it can change the amount of voltage in a circuit. You might use one to turn up the volume on music gear.

You can also use them to change how fast a fan spins. In some machines, they act as sensors to track movement. This helps a controller know exactly where a part has moved.

Inside the device, several parts work together to change the flow. There is a resistive element that resists electricity. A part called a wiper slides along this element to make contact.

When you turn a knob, the wiper moves to a new spot. This changes the path the electricity must take. If you only use two terminals, it acts as a variable resistor called a rheostat.

Most inexpensive models use graphite for the resistive element. Other types use metal wire or a ceramic and metal mixture called cermet.

There are many different shapes for these tools. A rotary potentiometer uses a spinning shaft to move the wiper. A linear slider potentiometer uses a wiper that slides in a straight line.

Sliders are helpful because you can see their position at a glance. Some models are very small and meant for fine-tuning. These are called trimmer potentiometers, or "trimpots" for short.

They are often adjusted with a tiny screwdriver rather than a finger. Some even work without touching anything at all. These contactless versions use magnets or light to sense position.

How the electricity changes depends on the "taper" of the device. A linear taper means the resistance changes at a steady rate. This is useful for things like adjusting a display on a screen.

A logarithmic taper, or "audio taper," changes differently. This type is used for volume because of how humans hear sound. In the US, these are often marked with the letter "A." In Europe, they might be marked with a "C" or "B."

Some special versions can turn many times for very precise changes.

These devices connect to things you use every day. You might find them inside a radio or a television. Before digital electronics, they helped switch a device on at a low volume.

You could then turn the knob to make the sound louder. In a home light dimmer, they help change the brightness of a lamp. They can even be linked together to control stereo sound. This allows you to balance the sound between two different speakers.
