A potentiometer is a tool used to control electricity.

It has three terminals, which are metal points for wires. Inside, there is a resistive element. This is a path that resists the flow of electricity. A part called a wiper slides along this path. As you turn a knob or slide a lever, the wiper moves. This changes how much electricity can pass through.

You can use them in many ways. Some people use them for volume knobs on music gear. Others use them to change the speed of a fan. Some move in a straight line. These are called slider potentiometers.

You might see them on a mixing console. Some turn many times to allow for very fine changes. These are called multiturn potentiometers. Small ones used for fine-tuning are called trimpots.

They are often adjusted with a tiny screwdriver. Some even use magnets or light to work without touching parts. This is called a contactless potentiometer.
