A variable capacitor is an electronic component designed to change its capacitance intentionally. Capacitance is a measure of how much electrical energy a device can store.

These components are essential for tuning devices to specific frequencies. For example, they allow a radio to select a single station from many signals. They are also used in antenna tuners for impedance matching. This process ensures that an antenna works efficiently with other electronic parts.

Most mechanical variable capacitors work by changing the relationship between metal plates. One set of plates is called the stator, which remains stationary. The other set is called the rotor, which can move.

In a common rotary design, the rotor consists of semicircular plates. These plates sit in the gaps between the stationary stator plates. As the rotor turns, the amount of overlapping surface area changes. When the plates are "meshed" or inter-laced, the capacitance reaches its maximum level. When they are "unmeshed," the capacitance is at its minimum.

Engineers use different materials between these plates to control how they work. Air or plastic foils are very common choices for the dielectric material. A vacuum variable capacitor uses a different approach for high-power needs. This type uses concentric cylinders called a sleeve and a plunger. These cylinders are sealed inside a glass or ceramic envelope under a high vacuum. The plunger moves in or out via a screw shaft to change the overlap. This vacuum environment allows the device to handle much higher voltages and currents. It also reduces the risk of arcing, which is when electricity jumps between plates.

There are several specialized shapes and structures for these components. A butterfly capacitor uses a butterfly-shaped rotor between two independent stator sets. Turning the rotor changes the capacitance between the rotor and both stators equally. These are useful in symmetrical circuits like RF power amplifiers. A split stator capacitor uses two separate packs of rotor electrodes. This design allows for a larger rotation angle of up to 180 degrees. Another type is the differential variable capacitor. In this version, turning the rotor increases capacity on one side while decreasing it on the other. This keeps the total sum of the two capacitances constant.

History shows us the origins of these important tools. The air-dielectric variable capacitor was invented by a Hungarian engineer named Dezső Korda. He received a German patent for his invention on 13 December 1893.

While many modern radios now use digital frequency synthesizers, these mechanical parts remain significant. They provided the foundation for early wireless communication technology.

Modern technology has moved toward electronic and digital control. Varactor diodes, or varicaps, change capacitance based on the voltage applied to them. These are used in FM radio and TV tuners. Other advanced technologies include Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) devices. These respond to high voltage to vary capacitance. Even more advanced are MEMS devices, which are micro-electromechanical systems. These are highly linear and are used for tuning antennas and filters. They represent the cutting edge of high-frequency radio tuning.

Variable capacitance is also used to turn physical movement into electrical signals. This is how a condenser microphone works. A thin diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor. When sound waves hit the diaphragm, it vibrates. This movement changes the distance between the diaphragm and a fixed plate. This change in distance alters the capacitance, creating an electrical signal.

You can also find these principles in computer keyboards and touch buttons. These sensors detect pressure or touch to act as electronic switches.
