A diode is a tiny part used in electronics.

It has two terminals, which are points where electricity enters and leaves. Its main job is to let electric current flow in only one direction.

You can think of a diode like a check valve in a water pipe. It lets water go forward but stops it from flowing back.

Most diodes today are semiconductor diodes. These are made from materials like silicon. They use a p-n junction, which is a special meeting point between two parts.

This junction helps control the flow. A diode needs a certain amount of voltage to start working. This is called a threshold voltage. Once the voltage is high enough, the current flows through.

Diodes do many important jobs. They can turn alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). This is called rectification. Some diodes, called LEDs, turn electricity into light.

You might see these small lights on your electronic devices. Other diodes can act as sensors to measure heat.
