These machines help fill a car's battery. There are two main ways to charge. The first way uses alternating current, or AC. Most power from the grid is AC. But car batteries need direct current, or DC. Most cars have a part called an onboard charger. This part changes AC power into DC power.

Another way uses DC charging stations. These stations have a large converter inside them. They change the power before it reaches the car. This lets the power go straight to the battery. This way is much faster than AC charging.

You can find these stations in many places. Public ones are at shops or parking lots. Private ones are at homes or work. Many cars use different plugs. Tesla made a small plug called NACS. Many other car brands will use it soon. Some new systems can even charge big trucks. These use very high power to work fast.
