Alloy

physical science Maturity 9-11 Vital Level 3 Next article →

An alloy is a mixture of different elements. At least one of these elements must be a metal. We call the main metal the base metal.

Why do we make alloys? Pure metals are often too soft. By mixing them, we can change how they act. We can make them stronger or harder. Some alloys resist corrosion, which is when metal breaks down from rust.

One way to make an alloy is to melt the base metal. Then, we add other elements into the hot liquid. The other parts dissolve into the mix. When the liquid cools, it becomes a solid.

Sometimes, the atoms in an alloy stay in a single, even layer. This is called a homogeneous structure. Other times, the atoms separate into different parts. This creates a heterogeneous structure.

People have used alloys for a very long time. Bronze is a famous old alloy made of tin and copper. It is much harder than either metal alone.

Today, we use many alloys. Steel is a common one made by adding carbon to iron. We also use special alloys in planes and tools. They help us build a very strong world.
