Non-stoichiometric compound

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Most solids are made of atoms. These atoms usually sit in a perfect pattern. But some solids are not perfect. They have tiny gaps or extra pieces. These are called non-stoichiometric compounds.

In these materials, the math is not simple. You cannot write their parts as small, easy numbers. Sometimes an atom is missing from its spot. This is called a vacancy. Other times, too many atoms are packed in. These tiny mistakes change how the solid works.

These changes can be very useful. For example, gaps let electrons move faster. This helps move power through the solid. Some solids can even carry hydrogen atoms. These materials are used to make better batteries. They are also used in sensors for cars. Some can even act as superconductors. A superconductor is a material that lets electricity flow with no loss. The way these gaps work helps make many new tools.
