People use them for many things like soup or olives. They even hold oil and chemicals. Around the world, 180 billion cans are made every year. This makes them the biggest single use for aluminum on Earth. They are very useful because they are light and do not rust. They also stay clean and are easy to press into shapes.

Making a can is a very neat process. Most cans are made of only two pieces. Workers start with a flat plate of metal. They use a method called drawing to shape the body and bottom. Then, they put a lid on the top. They use a sealing compound to make sure it is airtight. This keeps the air out so the food stays fresh. Inside, the can has a thin spray coating called an epoxy resin. This coating protects the metal from acidic drinks. It also stops the drink from tasting like metal.

History shows how these cans changed over time. Using aluminum for cans began in 1957. In 1962, a company named Alcoa made a big discovery. They created the easy-open end for beverage cans. They made it for the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. Now, almost all canned beer uses this kind of top. You do not even need a tool to open it. This invention made drinking much more convenient for everyone.

Recycling is a very important part of the can story. Cans are the most recycled beverage containers in the world. The global recycling rate for them is 69 percent. In 2012, Switzerland recycled 92 percent of its aluminum beverage cans. However, many cans still end up in landfills. In the US, about 700 million dollars of cans go to landfills each year. In 2017, the US made 3.8 million tons of aluminum. Only 0.62 million tons of that were recycled.

Some people even treat cans like treasures. Collecting cans is a popular hobby for many people. Collectors might look for soda, beer, or oil cans. Some people collect cans from different countries or famous events. For example, tennis player Andre Agassi had special Pepsi Max cans in 1996. One man named Davide Andreani holds a record for 20,000 soda cans. Another man, Chris Cavaletti, owned over 12,000 Pepsi Cola cans. Cans are a way to see art and history from all over the world.
