Plastic wrap is a very thin film used to seal food.

It helps keep food items fresh for a longer time. This wrap clings to many smooth surfaces. It stays tight over a container without using any glue. Most brands on store shelves are very thin. They are often only 8, 9, or 10 micrometers thick. This thinness makes it easy to use in homes.

This wrap works by protecting food in three different ways. First, it provides a chemical barrier. It blocks gases, moisture, and light from reaching the food. Second, it offers biological protection. This means it keeps out insects, animals, and tiny microorganisms. Third, it protects against physical damage.

By doing these things, it can reduce food waste and help distribute products easily.

Many materials are used to make these films. Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is the most common material used globally. PVC is good because it stops water vapor and oxygen well. Another common choice is low-density polyethylene, known as LDPE. This is a cheaper alternative to PVC. To make LDPE stick better, makers add linear low-density polyethylene, or LLDPE. This addition also makes the film stronger.

People have used different types of plastic for many years. In the middle of the 20th century, a product called Pliofilm was used. It was made of rubber chloride and could be heat-sealed. In the US and Japan, some makers use polyvinylidene chloride, or PVdC. However, some brands like Saran Wrap changed their formulas. They did this because of concerns about the environment. Scientists and officials like Edward Machuga from the FDA study these materials closely.

Plastic wrap can also be used in important ways outside the kitchen. In hospitals, it can wrap premature babies after they are born. This helps them stay warm before they reach intensive care. It is also used as a dressing for burns.

However, we must be careful with plastic waste. Plastic debris can end up in the ocean. Sea turtles might mistake plastic for food. This can cause big problems for animals and our planet.
