Plastic mulch

Farmers use thin sheets of plastic to cover the soil around their crops. This is called plastic mulch. It is a very useful tool in a way of farming called plasticulture.

This plastic helps plants grow in many helpful ways. It can stop weeds from stealing nutrients from the crops. It also helps keep water in the soil so plants do not get thirsty. Some plastic sheets even act as a barrier for chemicals in the dirt. This makes it a very important part of growing vegetables on a large scale.

Using plastic mulch works through several clever steps. First, a machine called a bed shaper makes rows in the soil. This machine also tucks drip irrigation lines under the plastic.

The plastic must be laid quite tight to work well. Next, farmers use a waterwheel transplanter to plant the crops. This machine has drums with spikes that punch holes in the film. As the spike hits the plastic, water flows into the new hole. A person then places a plant into that spot.

People began using plastic films for plants in the mid-1950s. Dr. Emery M. Emmert from the University of Kentucky was a pioneer. He saw how special plastics could help vegetable production.

In New Zealand, strawberry growers also started using plastic in the mid-fifties. By the years 1960 and 1961, all commercial strawberries there used black plastic. At first, farmers had to lay the plastic by hand. Later, they built their own machines in small workshops to help.

There are many specific facts about how different colors work. Dark or clear mulches catch sunlight to warm the soil. This helps plants grow much faster in the early spring. White mulch does the opposite by reflecting heat away. This keeps the soil cool during the hot mid-summer months.

Using plastic also keeps fruit like strawberries clean. The fruit stays on top of the plastic instead of touching the dirt. This helps prevent the fruit from rotting.

While plastic mulch is helpful, it also brings some hard jobs. It costs more money for the film and the special machines.

Removing the old plastic after harvest is also a big task. If the plastic is not cleaned up, it can stay in the soil. This can be bad for earthworms and tiny microbes. To fix this, scientists are studying biodegradable polymers. These are special materials that can break down naturally in the environment.
