It helps crops grow in many ways. Dark plastic can warm up the soil. This helps plants grow faster in the spring. White plastic reflects heat to keep soil cool.

The plastic also keeps water in the dirt. This means farmers use less water for their crops. It stops weeds from growing by blocking sunlight.

Plants grow through small holes in the sheet. This keeps fruit, like strawberries, clean and off the dirt. It also helps prevent fruit rot.

Farmers use special machines to lay the plastic. A bed shaper makes rows in the soil. It also puts drip irrigation lines under the plastic. To plant, they use a waterwheel transplanter. This machine has drums with spikes. The spikes punch holes in the plastic. A person then places a plant in each hole. Using plastic costs more money for tools and work. It can also be hard to clean up. Some plastic stays in the soil. This can hurt earthworms and tiny microbes. Scientists are looking at biodegradable polymers. These are plastics that can break down naturally.
