Extrusion

Extrusion is a special way to make long objects with a set shape.

This method is great because it can create very complex shapes. It also works well with materials that might break easily. This happens because the material only feels squeezing and sliding forces. You can use it to make many things. These items are called extrudates.

Common materials include metals, plastics, ceramics, and even food like pasta.

The way it works is like squeezing toothpaste from a tube. First, the material is heated if it is a hot extrusion.

This makes the material softer and easier to push. The material is placed in a container. Then, a part called a ram pushes the material through a tool called a die. The die has a specific shape. As the material flows through the die, it takes that shape.

To make hollow shapes like pipes, a rod called a mandrel is used inside the die. This creates a hole in the middle of the object.

People have used different versions of this for a long time. In 1797, Joseph Bramah patented the first process for making metal pipes. He used a hand-driven plunger to push the metal through a die. Later, in 1820, Thomas Burr used a hydraulic press for lead pipes. Back then, people actually called the process "squirting."

Over the years, more materials were added. Alexander Dick used it for copper in 1894. Steel extrusion began in 1951, and titanium was developed later in the 1960s and 1970s.

There are many ways to control the heat and speed. Hot extrusion happens above a certain temperature to make pushing easier. For example, aluminum is heated between 350 and 500 degrees Celsius.

Steel needs much more heat, between 1,200 and 1,300 degrees Celsius. Cold extrusion happens at room temperature instead. This can make parts like fire extinguisher cases or gear blanks. Cold extrusion can also create a better surface finish and stronger parts.

You can see extrusion in many parts of your life. It is used to make the plastic pipes that carry water. It is also used to make the metal bars used in building. Even your dinner might involve extrusion! Some pasta is made using this process to get its shape.

It is also used for things like modeling clay.
