A lathe is a very useful machine tool.

It works by spinning a piece of material called a workpiece. This material rotates around a central axis, which is an imaginary line through its middle. While the piece spins, a cutting tool touches it to change its shape. This process creates objects that have symmetry around that center line. You can use a lathe to make many things.

People use them to make screws, table legs, and even baseball bats. They are also used for making musical instruments like woodwind tools. Some lathes even help shape pottery on a potter's wheel.

To make something, the lathe follows a specific way it works. First, the machine holds the workpiece in place. This is often done using a chuck or a collet. A chuck is a device that clamps the work around the spinning axis. At one end of the machine is the headstock. This part contains a spindle, which is a spinning axle. The spindle provides the power to turn the workpiece.

At the other end is the tailstock. The tailstock can slide along the bed to support long pieces. It can also hold a drill bit to make holes. A cutting tool is then moved against the spinning material to shave it down.

Lathes are ancient tools that humans have used for a very long time. We see evidence of lathes in ancient Egypt from the 4th century BC. There are also very old traces of turned items from Greek sites. In the 6th century BC, people in Italy and Turkey made wooden bowls and dishes. During the Warring States period, ancient Chinese people used rotary lathes. They used them on an industrial scale to sharpen weapons and tools. Even the writer Pliny described using a lathe to turn soft stone.

As time passed, lathes became much more precise. In 1718, a Russian engineer named Andrey Nartov made a version with a mechanical carriage. Another important part was the slide-rest, which appeared in a French book in 1717. The slide-rest is helpful because it holds the tool very steady. This allows the machine to make very accurate cylindrical shapes. In 1772, Jan Verbruggen installed a horse-powered lathe in England.

This machine bored cannons that were used in the American Revolutionary War. These cannons were stronger and more accurate than older ones.

Today, lathes are much more advanced than the old versions. During the Industrial Revolution, machines used water wheels or steam engines for power. Later, individual electric motors replaced those old power systems. In the 1950s, engineers began using servomechanisms to control the machines. This led to computerized numerical control, which people call CNC.

Now, both manual lathes and CNC lathes are used in factories. You can see the results of lathes in many everyday objects. From the pens you write with to the crankshafts in engines, they help build our world.
