Soldering is a way to join metal surfaces together.

It uses a special filler metal called solder to create a bond. This bond is very useful because it is electrically conductive. It can also be made gas-tight and liquid-tight. People use this skill in many different jobs. It is common in the electronics industry for making circuit boards.

Plumbers also use it to connect copper pipes. You might even see it used to make jewelry or musical instruments.

To make a joint, you must follow a specific way it works. First, you must clean the metal parts. Next, you fit the parts together and apply flux. Then, you heat the surfaces to be joined. When the metal is hot enough, you melt the solder onto it.

This melting process is called wetting. The liquid metal flows into the spaces between the parts. In wires, the solder can soak up between the strands. This is called wicking. Finally, you remove the heat and hold the parts still until the solder cools and becomes solid.

Humans have been using soldering for a very long time. There is evidence that people used it 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. It likely began even earlier, perhaps before 4000 BC. Ancient Sumerian swords were even assembled using hard soldering.

In the past, it was used for many household items. People used it to make cookware, tools, and stained glass. It was also a way to make beautiful jewelry.

Different types of solder are made of different metal mixes, called alloys.

A common mix for electronics is a eutectic alloy. This mix is 63% tin and 37% lead. A eutectic alloy is special because it melts at one single temperature. This helps the solder cool quickly without moving. Some people use tin-silver or tin-bismuth alloys instead. Many people now use lead-free solder to protect the environment.

This is important for health and for keeping rain from washing lead into the ground.

There are three main ways to join metal using heat. The first is soft soldering, which uses temperatures below 450 °C. It is great for electronics but does not make a very strong joint.

The second way is silver soldering, which uses much higher temperatures. This method is much stronger and is used by jewelers. The third way is brazing, which uses the most heat of all. Brazing uses a brass alloy to make the strongest joints.

It can even be used to repair heavy iron furniture.
