People use a filler metal called solder to make the bond. This metal is often a mix of different metals. These mixes are called alloys.

Some alloys use tin and lead. Other alloys use tin and silver. Many people now use lead-free solder. This is better for the Earth and for health.

To solder, you must first heat the metal parts. Then, you melt the solder onto them. This is called wetting. The liquid metal flows into the tiny spaces. In wires, it can soak up between strands. This is called wicking.

Once the solder cools, it becomes solid. This makes a strong and tight joint.

There are three main ways to join metal with heat. Soft soldering uses low heat. It is great for electronics. Silver soldering uses more heat. It is stronger and used for jewelry. Brazing uses the most heat. It makes the strongest joints of all.
