Solder is a metal mix used to join metal parts.

It works by melting. The liquid metal flows onto the parts. Then it cools and makes a strong bond.

To work well, solder must melt at a lower heat than the parts it joins. Some solder is called eutectic. This means it has the lowest melting point possible. It turns from a liquid to a solid all at once. Other types stay like a paste for a short time. Plumbers use this paste to shape the metal around pipes. This helps make the joints watertight.

In the past, many solders used lead. Today, most electronics use lead-free solder. This is better for the health of people and the Earth. Lead-free solder often uses tin, silver, and copper.

Different jobs need different tools. Small wires use very thin solder wire. Plumbers use thick bars of solder. Jewelers might even use thin sheets of metal. Some workers use a tool called a soldering iron. Others use a flame to melt the metal.
