A forming press is a very useful machine tool. It changes the shape of a piece of material by using pressure.

People who set up these machines are called tool-setters. There are many different ways these machines work. Some use air, while others use liquid or motors. They can be used to make almost anything from metal.

One way a press works is through a shop press. This machine usually has a simple rectangular frame. It uses a cylinder to push a part called a ram. The ram presses down on the work-piece to change its shape.

A shop press can apply between 1 and 30 tons of pressure. These are great for putting gears onto shafts. They are often found in garages or machine shops.

History shows us how these tools have changed over time. Long ago, people shaped metal by hand with hammers. A smith might have an apprentice help swing the heavy hammer. Later, inventors made much larger hammers to work with thicker metal. James Watt described a steam hammer in 1784. However, James Nasmyth did not build one until 1840. By 1891, the Bethlehem Iron Company made a steam hammer that could deliver a 125-ton blow.

Different presses have very special jobs to do. A press brake bends sheet metal into shapes like computer cases. Some of these machines use CNC controls to be very exact. A punch press is used specifically to make holes. A stamping press uses a die to shape or cut metal.

Capping presses are even faster. They can make caps from aluminum foil at 660 per minute.

Modern machines also use smart technology to save energy. A servo-press uses an AC servo motor to move. This type of machine uses only 10% to 20% of the energy that other presses need. Because they can be dangerous, workers use special safety tools. They use bi-manual controls which require two hands on buttons. They also use light curtains to stop the machine if someone gets too close.
