Carbon steel is a very important metal used all over the world. It is made by mixing iron with a small amount of carbon. This carbon can make up anywhere from 0.05% to 2.1% of the weight.

By changing how much carbon is inside, we change how the metal acts. Some steel is soft and easy to bend, while other steel is very hard. This makes it a versatile material for many different jobs. It is also great for our planet because it is easy to recycle.

There are different ways to change the strength of this metal. One way is called heat treatment, which uses heat to change the metal's properties. For example, you can heat steel to about 850°C. If you then cool it very fast in water or oil, it is called quenching. This makes the steel much harder and stronger. However, it also makes the metal more brittle, which means it might snap instead of bending.

People have used different types of steel for a long time. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) helps define what carbon steel is. They say it must not have too much of other metals like nickel or chromium. If you add a lot of those metals, it becomes alloy steel instead. Scientists also use a special chart called an iron-carbon phase diagram. This diagram shows how temperature and carbon change the metal's structure.

We can group carbon steel into four main classes based on carbon levels. Low-carbon steel has between 0.05% and 0.15% carbon. This is often called mild steel because it is cheap and easy to shape. Medium-carbon steel has about 0.3% to 0.5% carbon and is used for car parts. High-carbon steel has 0.6% to 1.0% carbon and is used for tools. Finally, ultra-high-carbon steel has 1.25% to 2.0% carbon and is used for special knives.

You can find carbon steel in almost everything around you. Low-carbon steel is used to make car body panels, pipes, and even food cans. High-carbon steel is used for tougher things like garden tools, axes, and springs. Because carbon steel can rust in wet or salty air, people often coat it. They might use paint or varnish to keep it safe. Some people also add chromium to make it stainless steel so it does not rust easily.
